JSA Statement on the High-Level Group on Health constituted by the Finance Commission

Jan Swasthya Abhiyan lodges a strong protest against the constitution of ‘High-Level Group on Health’ and urges the government to revoke this committee. Health is an important public policy matter and any committee constituted to frame policies or provide recommendations related to it should be representative of all interests and sections in the society. The finance commission is a constitutional body vested with specific powers related to financial devolution. It has no role in planning for health and should not be given any responsibility that would be an overreach of its powers. To read the full statement,  click here .

Let us not forget the children of Gorakhpur while celebrating 7 decades of Independence

Seventy years of independence, in normal circumstances, should call for celebrations across the nation. Unfortunately these are not normal times. For once we hoped that even this government, hard wired to proclaim its nonexistent ‘achievements’ in strident tones accompanied by incessant jingoist chest thumping, would have considered shedding a few tears for the children of Gorakhpur who did not live to see their country celebrate its 70th year after independence. Alas that was not to be – the children of Gorakhpur, we were informed from the ramparts of the Red Fort, were victims of a ‘natural calamity’.

Abnormal Rise in Caesarean Sections

The commercialisation of caesarean deliveries, especially in private hospitals, hit the headlines recently following an online petition. It was further highlighted when Women and Child Welfare Minister Maneka Gandhi asked the Ministry of Health to ensure that hospitals make public the number of caesarean births. National Health Policy 2017: Reactions

The government of India announced the new National Health Policy 2017 after a draft was in circulation for over 18 months. The policy can be downloaded here and the  situation analysis here.
